Question: What are the gold coins for in the ds game n+?

I just got the game and i've been ignoring all of the gold coins. Do the serve a purpose?

The pieces of gold in N+ (and its predecessor, N) add 2 seconds to your time bar. If time runs out, you die, so if this happens, just get some gold on your next run!
