Question: Rare pikes peak gold coin, replica or real? (Posted by: Out Of Her Head She Sang... on 2010-01-17 15:44:57) Hi, I have a rare pikes peak gold twenty dollar piece from 1860. Apparently it's worth around 675,000.00 dollars. I don't think I have the real copy, but to be safe in case I do, is there a way to distinguish the real copy from a replica/counterfit? Here's a picture of the coin. http://www.us-coin-values-advisor.com/images/Clark-and-Gruber.jpg thanks in advance (I did not take the picture I showed you) |

Posted by: Taiping on 2010-01-18, 12:34:06 There were many copies made of rare coins in the 1960's and none had copy on them. Yours does look like a copy for the images are off a little from the pictures in the Red Book, but it has limit use. I am not aware of any new coins of this type being found in a long long time. You would have to find a coin dealer that has the books on private and territorial gold. Other books only give a photo with little info. See if a coin club is in your area they may have the books. |

Many of the copies are made of brass and will have an R, C, or the word COPY underneath the word DENVER. ***Please see the second link at the bottom of the page.*** If you still wonder, you might take the item to a coin dealer specializing in gold coins. I hope that helps. EDIT: Did you say your item was made in the 1960's or that the photo was of your item? |
